How We Approach Every Matter
Every client who comes to Budi Guaman goes through a consistent process — one designed to ensure you are informed, included in decisions, and never left wondering what is happening next.
We begin with a conversation. We explain what the law says. We outline the realistic options. Then, if you decide to proceed, we handle the legal work with the same level of care and communication throughout.
Listen & Understand
We take time to understand your full situation before advising.
Explain the Options
We present all routes — including mediation — with realistic expectations.
Agree the Scope
We confirm what we will handle, at what cost, in a written engagement letter.
Keep You Updated
We update you at every meaningful development — without you having to ask.
Service One
Family Consultation
A private conversation to understand your situation and explain the routes available, including mediation. We take our time and leave the decision with you.
Many people come to this consultation uncertain whether they even need a lawyer. That is a perfectly reasonable place to start. We will give you an honest picture of what your options look like, what they typically cost in time and money, and what the likely path through each one involves.
What this service covers:
- Private, in-person or remote consultation (approximately 60 minutes)
- Overview of legal options including mediation and collaborative approaches
- Explanation of relevant Malaysian family law provisions
- Realistic outline of timelines and costs for different paths
- No obligation to proceed with any service after the meeting
Typical process:
You send us a brief message or call to arrange an appointment
We confirm a time and send you a short intake form to complete beforehand
We meet privately, review your situation, and discuss all relevant options
You leave with a clear picture of your position and any next steps you may wish to consider

Service Two
Separation & Divorce Representation
Tactful representation through separation or divorce, including documents, correspondence, and negotiation, handled calmly and respectfully with clear updates at every stage.
We handle the full scope of a divorce matter under the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 — from initial petition preparation through to decree absolute. We manage correspondence with the other party or their solicitor, prepare all required documentation, and represent you in court where necessary.
What this service covers:
- Preparation and filing of all court documents
- Negotiation and correspondence with the other party
- Attendance at court hearings where required
- Regular written updates at each significant stage
- Guidance on ancillary matters (matrimonial assets, maintenance)
Typical process:
Initial consultation (included or from prior service) to confirm instructions
Engagement letter issued; documents gathered and petition prepared
Petition filed; negotiation and correspondence with opposing party managed
Court attendance where required; decree nisi and decree absolute obtained

Service Three
Custody & Maintenance Support
Careful assistance with custody, access, and maintenance, focused on the children's welfare. We represent your interests before the relevant authorities with tact.
Decisions about where children live, how much time they spend with each parent, and what financial support is provided can be among the most consequential of any family matter. We approach these with the child's welfare as the central concern — as the law requires — and look for arrangements that are workable in practice, not just acceptable on paper.
What this service covers:
- Advice and representation on custody and guardianship applications
- Negotiation of access and care arrangements
- Applications for child and spousal maintenance orders
- Representation at the Family Court and at relevant authorities
- Post-order guidance on rights and obligations
Typical process:
Private consultation to understand the children's circumstances and your position
Explore collaborative or mediated arrangements where possible
Prepare and file applications at the relevant court where needed
Represent your interests at hearings; obtain and brief you on any orders made
